  3. Usually a home equity loan is obtained to make available a lump sum of money. This money is the amount of worth you have built up in your home by paying your payments and keeping up with the mortgage. Your home is the collateral for the loan and that makes it a big risk. However, if you are sure you can handle the payment it can be a wonderful asset.
